What we've been doing in class

CHINESE NEW YEAR

In Nursery we have been learning about Chinese New Year.   This year is the year of the snake and we were born in either the year of the rat or the ox.  We read The Great Race about twelve animals racing in the river.  Rat cheated and even pushed the cat off the ox.  We learnt that red is a lucky colour and made red and gold lanterns.  We also made a money wallet with a gold chocolate coin because children are given these as presents.  We wrote Chinese numbers and some animal names and painted a Chinese flag.  We also danced to loud music, 'A dragon dance' using some Chinese instruments and went outside to throw fun snaps which made a loud banging noise.  We then performed a special assembly for our Mums and Dads.  What a fun two weeks.   Gung Hay Fat Choy!

Look at us eating noodles using chopsticks.

Christmas

During R.E. we learnt that Mary and Joseph travelled on a donkey to Bethlehem.  Baby Jesus was born there in a stable.  Shepherds and The Three Kings came to visit him.  Christmas Day is Jesus' birthday.  We performed a very special Christmas Nativity for our families, telling the story and singing lots of Christmas songs.  We all dressed up in special angel costumes.

We have had a wonderful time in Nursery leading up to Christmas with lots and lots of fun activities.  Here are just a few of them.  We made Snowman Christmas cards, we went to the post office to post letters to Father Christmas, he then came to visit us with a present, we made a Christmas bauble, had Christmas dinner, enjoyed a Christmas party, sang a special carol concert, decorated a Christmas tree with our own baubles, took turns to take the Posada box home, made a funny calendar to sell at the PTA fair, baked a Christmas tree biscuit, went to see  '200% Wolf' at the cinema, watched the pantomime 'The National Elf Service' and had a relaxing slumber afternoon with hot chocolate.   Phew!!!!! We are so tired now.

We have been learning about Diwali, the festival of light.  We made rangoli patterns using chalk, had henna mendhi patterns on our hands, played with coloured rice , used scissors to cut along lines to coloured fireworks  and made clay glitter diva lamps to take home. We also made mango, coconut sweets which is a traditional treat.

We also learnt about 'Holi', the festival of colour.  We went outside and expressed our happiness by throwing coloured powder paint.  It was super fun!

After reading Owl Babies this week,  Simon and Taz visited us from Cheshire Falconry with four different owls.  They taught us so many facts about what owls eat, about their ears and their different breeds.  We loved watching them fly around the room.  We could then stroke Walter who is a very big owl.

Nursery went on a walk to look for signs of autumn. We searched for conkers, pine cones, sticks and autumn leaves and collected some of these items in our own bags. We took them back to school and talked about what we had found, before taking them home.  We talked about the colours of the leaves, how they fall from the trees and how the weather changes throughout the seasons.
