Life Cycles

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

By Eric Carle

This half term as part of our topic 'Minibeasts', we have been learning about the life cycle of a butterfly. One of our core stories we enjoyed listening to was 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' by Eric Carle. We enjoyed discussing as a class the different stages of the life cycle we could see from the story. We could not believe that a tiny caterpillar turns into a beautiful butterfly!

We then had to put our new knowledge learnt into action as we looked after our very own class caterpillars! All of the children were very excited to care for them and to see them grow. Over the last few weeks, we have seen our class caterpillars transform from being in eggs, to tiny caterpillars, to making cocoons to finally turning into magnificent butterflies! Once all of our class caterpillars had turned into butterflies we then went outside and released them; we were all so excited to see them fly away and make their new home outside.

After this, we performed the poem 'Caterpillar' to further embed our learning around the life cycle of a butterfly!
